Tara Charendoff
October 1, 1998

HSHost says "Welcome to the first night of our special Thirty-one Days of Terror Series. It's October 1st and you are chatting live (or undead) at Real Horrorwood! My name is April and I'll be your macabre host for the evening. Joining me in the studio tonight are my spooky producers Mike and Peter, and our Gothic typist, Michelle. For the entire month of Shocktober, we'll be presenting the strangest, the weirdest, the scariest of guests, leading up to the most sacred of horror days, HALLOWEEN! Stars of big and small scream, uh, screen, will be joining us as the sun sets and the night holds reign."
HSHost says "If you would like to ask our guest a question this evening, it's very simple. Just type in /ask a space and then your question. If you're using "Excite's VP chat" you need only click the "something to say" icon at the bottom right corner of your screen. We are all very excited about our special guest this evening, actress Tara Charendoff from "Sabrina, The Teenage Witch." Welcome to Hollywood Spotlight, Tara!"
TaraCharendoff says "Hello!"
Sid asks "Tell us what the movie is about?"
TaraCharendoff says "Well, it's based on the weekly series Sabrina, the Teenage Witch about her traveling to Rome to solve the mystery behind the locket her father gave her to see if she can uncover the powers within. She meets up with an English witch, Gwen, who is yours truly."
sadge1127 asks "what was it like going to Rome to film a movie?"
TaraCharendoff says "It was great! I knew every cobblestone and on our days off we went to Florence and Venice, and the food was great. It was unforgettable, truly amazing."
HSHost says "That's great!"
Sid asks "Tara, what else have you done besides Sabrina?"
TaraCharendoff says "I started when I was 13 working in Toronto, Canadian productions and I did an episode of Party of Five in the first season and guest spots on Maybe This Time and I do a ton of animation voice-overs. I love doing that. It's so much fun to see characters come to life, you have freedom, they give you a drawing of the character and you figure out what the character should sound like, the voice over actors go first, so the animators have to match it. I always say if Robin Williams didn't do the genie first, you wouldn't get half the animation you got! We just play at the mic stand. It's a great job."
sadge1127 asks "what tips do you have for someone wanting to get into voice overs"
TaraCharendoff says "I'd say go for it. If you wanna do it and think you have versatility for commercial voice overs you don't have to manipulate your voice as much. But in animation they like to stick to the same people and that way you can do a few characters in one cartoon. Put together a tape, even if it's made at home and go through magazines and read stuff that sounds like a commercial or a character and put it together with a pic and letter and send it out."
bobby_brady asks "DO you feel that cartoons are contributing to the "Dumbing Down" of Americas youth?"
TaraCharendoff says "No, I think they're all in good fun, kids get a kick out of it, Rugrats you can watch with parents and kids and you see life through the eyes of kids and how kids are perceived by parents and it makes for a wonderfully comedic show. Without stuff like that, we'd be lost ... if everything was furious and real. There are cartoons I watched as a kid and I was like, oh I'd love to do that one day! I just did a Scooby Doo movie and I bought it at K-Mart and worked with a couple of the original cast members? Along with The Mermaid II, what little girl didn't want to be the mermaid, you know?"
HSHost says "Was Casey Kasem involved in Scooby Doo?"
TaraCharendoff says "No and I'm not sure why. He was voiced by Billy West, the voice of Ren & Stimpy, an incredibly talented man. It's called Scooby Doo on Zombie Island and the voice match is incredible. I play the bad character ... they can buy it on video now."
sadge1127 asks "was the school of performing arts in Toronto anything like Fame"
TaraCharendoff says "I'd say something like it ... in that for part of the day we were taking dance, singing, acting classes and another part we'd have schoolwork. I was hoping it'd be like that cause if you're a performer, that's the ultimate. Fill your brain with info but be able to exercise the performance stuff."
SRT5 asks "were you a good student in the school"
TaraCharendoff says "I was a good student, I'd cry if I got 95. I began acting professionally at 13 and initially the teachers are excited for you and want to help, but when you miss school they think you're not taking it seriously. So, to finish high school was important to me and I'm glad that I did."
SRT5 asks "TARA how old are you"
TaraCharendoff says "In my early twenties."
TaraCharendoff {action} laughs!"
TaraCharendoff says "I have a bit of a cold today."
HSHost says "Oh I hope you feel better. Thanks even more for coming on!"
SRT5 asks "TARA do you have brothers or sisters"
TaraCharendoff says "One older sister."
HSHost says "Any pets?"
TaraCharendoff says "A puppy dog named Abby ..."
sadge1127 asks "Do you have any pets"
TaraCharendoff says "She looks like a golden retriever but a black face with a white stripe and she looks like she's wearing eyeliner."
Sid asks "Do you live here in LA?"
TaraCharendoff says "I moved here in 1994, my second week was the big earthquake."
TaraCharendoff {action} laughs!"
TaraCharendoff says "I knew that I'd have to be here, so it was something I always wanted to do. I knew I'd do it, so the earthquake wasn't going to stop me."
SRT5 asks "how did you get the role for the movie Sabrina"
TaraCharendoff says "Actually my theatrical agent submitted me knowing I did accents well cause my character has an English accent, when you're an actor, you go on several auditions and it's usually you're too young, or they want a name or whatever ... So, this was one I actually immediately had a real liking to I thought the script was sweet and the character was endearing and the opportunity to go to Italy was great. I had to go to 3 or 4 auditions and it was so gut wrenching. Anyone who is an actor, really wants to do it and you have to keep pursuing it cause no matter how good you are, there's always someone who is as good. So, when you think I've got a shot at this, every single audition, you get nervous."
sadge1127 asks "what's Melissa Joan Hart like"
TaraCharendoff says "She's awesome! Anyone who says different is wrong. We're very good friends and I'm speaking to her long distance in Utah where she's filming. We went to Venice on our days off."
sadge1127 asks "did you like the italians"
TaraCharendoff says "Oh yeah they were great! And, we had the best food there ever. We went to a restaurant called Alfredo's where they invented fettucini alfredo .. they bring the fettucini and sauce to your table and mix it there and you get to help."
SRT5 asks "Do you believe in witchcraft"
TaraCharendoff says "A good question ... Hmmm ... I don't believe in the dark side of it and I think any real witchcraft comes from within. I think it's very personal ... I believe I've had experiences where I've dreamt or seen things before and mind over matter where you can get over things and if you allow that spirituality to come through and be good to other people ... I'd dream things and see that entire situation take place, they freak you out. But, it's an awfully big world for it to be just us on this planet. But, I don't believe in scary things or voodoo curses."
HSHost says "that's bad!"
TaraCharendoff says "yeah."
TaraCharendoff {action} giggles"
guest1282 asks "did you go to a Restaurant Duo Forni in Venice where they have the fish on ice flopping around and you get to pick out which one you want/"
TaraCharendoff says "Oooooh gross!!!! We only had dinner at two different places in Venice, but I prefer the food in Rome."
HSHost says "Did you only stay in Rome?"
TaraCharendoff says "We went to Venice and Florence ... amazing to see the David and Venus, but we shot in a few small towns an hour away from Rome, beautiful, picturesque, idyllic and this one place that was like a mansion. So, when you see it this Sunday there are scenes where Melissa goes back in time and the mansion is transformed to the 1800's ... amazing. And, the guy that plays Sabrina's love interest ... Eddie, his pics are unbelievable .. we all got copies of them."
Sid asks "What part do you play in the movie?"
TaraCharendoff says "Gwen, a little witch addicted to jellybeans and doesn't get all the spells right."
Sid asks "Are you a regular on the show?"
TaraCharendoff says "Let's all write fan letters, okay?"
TaraCharendoff {action} laughs!"
TaraCharendoff says "Send them to Disney/ABC or viacom. A lot of people think celebrities are bothered when complimented, but it's always nice when someone says I like your work. And, a lot of time with the animation it's nice to get fan mail and letters cause they don't know who you are. They don't get the recognition ... it's nice to have fans."
SRT5 asks "did you always wanted to be an actress"
TaraCharendoff says "Absolutely ... I knew when I was 3. The teacher asked if anyone wanted to perform a song and I sang and danced in front of the school. I have memories of wanting to be an actress and never letting it get to my head. So, I"ve maintained a cool head and realized that what I get to do I'm very lucky. I have this opportunity and I got paid to do it and work on this job that's so much fun."
HSHost says "That's good you realize that! I like you!"
SRT5 asks "what is the next step for your career"
TaraCharendoff says "I'm working on Rugrats where I play the new baby, Dill which will be in theaters in Thanksgiving. And a series for Hannah Barbera , and King of the Hill, and a new series on Nickelodeon, I'm auditioning and hopefully will get more film and tv work."
BaldheadedStepchild asks "Do you like to go on location or do you prefer to work on a sound stage?"
TaraCharendoff says "Since Italy, I'd love to travel. I didn't realize it, but for anyone who has the time or money, it's important once a year to try to go somewhere and do something ... it makes you so rich. When you look at something like The Birth Of Venus, you think wow you are 500 years old and every brush stroke is so beautiful! So much to learn and see and exciting .. and it fills your brain .. it's exciting."
TaraCharendoff says "I was there for six weeks. I could live there but that was perfect. A lot of people were complaining and they missed Ralph's and Sav On but you have to realize that every culture is different. I learned enough Italian to get by and it's beautiful when you get to experience that."
SRT5 asks "tara what do you like most in the show"
TaraCharendoff {action} chuckles"
TaraCharendoff says "Aside from being in Italy and working with a great cast, for me this is fun cause we get to do spells. So, the fun stuff is the magic and my character doesn't get all the spells right. I turn my love interest into a pigeon, but to do the magic is interesting and as an actor you don't do that a lot. The effects are interesting, there's a scene where we get covered in mud and Sabrina's magic gets us clean again."
TaraCharendoff says "So, we got mud thrown on us and it was fun and then we have to freeze and then we go off get cleaned up and we have to come back and match our positions perfectly and they have to say Tara lift your head higher ... And, the different magic we had to do later on on a green screen was interesting."
sadge1127 asks "what's the difference between acting and doing voice overs"
TaraCharendoff says "Well, I'd say they're both acting. A lot of people think Oh I can get into a sound booth and do it ... it's not true. You have to act, sell the show and if you watch an animation session going on the actors arms are flailing and they're moving to get in character. The difference is you don't have to memorize your lines, don't have to do hair and makeup and you don't have to wait for them to set the shot, which can take long. Took long in Italy cause half the crew was Italian. They are both wonderful in their own ways, I love both."
Dan_K asks "who would we be surprised to know does voice overs?"
TaraCharendoff says "I was surprised when I was sitting in my Batman session when suddenly Mark Hamill sits beside me and I was like OH my God! Luke Skywalker! And, he's so nice, every time he sees me, he's like Tara! And, a lot of celebrities like doing guest spots on animation. A lot of the voice over actors are so nice and generally happy when their friends book work. There's plenty of work for everyone."
SRT5 asks "how you feel about the success of the show"
TaraCharendoff says "I think it's wonderful .. a really light, good-hearted show. I think quite a range of people like it, I'll talk to someone who I think is too old to like it but they say no I love it! There's enough going on that's interesting and she has charisma and the whole cast fits together nicely. When you go on that set, there'll be a doll that comes to life in the Halloween episode and I did the voice and got to learn the puppeteering for it .. everyone gets along and laughs and they recognize that it's a nice set. Really nice. The puppeteers are awesome, the girl that puppeteers Salem is always hiding under something and she's just awesome!"
Dan_K asks "What is the best encounter you have had with another celebrity?"
TaraCharendoff says "Oooh. Good question. I'd say one of them is Melissa cause I really love her and value our new friendship dearly. I worked with Angelica Houston once and she was awesome ... she came to the scene with a lot of wisdom and would talk to us not in a condescending way but in that she shared the scene with us and what we were feeling. She played our mother. Sam Neill was in that, too and she was awesome. The first celebrity I worked with was Mr. T in Canada and he said "Well ain't you something else!" to me."
TaraCharendoff says "He's really really nice. He played this lawyer guy ... he still had his mohawk, but he'd be in a suit. I was 13 and dressed in a pink sweater with a red bow and green socks and someone yelled out Look! It's Punky Brewster! I was like, oh no!"
HSHost {action} laughs!~"
SRT5 asks "how it was like working with the other actors of the show party of five"
TaraCharendoff says "Neve I've known since high school we went to Interact in Canada which was designed for people who missed a lot of school and she was in ballet. So, she went out for Phantom and got it so I've known her since I was young. She was always sweet and nice, I moved to LA and she moved a month later and she stayed with me and in her second week, she auditioned for POF and booked the job. I was only in the first episode and I played the cool girl where Neve's character was a nerd. she wanted to hang out with us. Right after that I booked the National Lampoon film shooting in Toronto ... of course! The first film I book in LA is shooting in Toronto!"
guest1285 asks "Who is the most interesting person you know (or have met)?"
TaraCharendoff says "Oh boy. Oh dear ...."
TaraCharendoff {action} chuckles"
TaraCharendoff says "Let's come back to that one."
IAmALoveGod asks "Besides porno is there a role or project you would not do?"
TaraCharendoff {action} laughs!"
TaraCharendoff says "No, definitely would not do porno or anything close."
TaraCharendoff says "I think unnecessary nudity is silly, I don't have a problem if it's important to the scene, I wouldn't do full frontal. I like the mystique that a lot of the big actors carry with them that haven't done it. I probably wouldn't be crazy about doing a children's show in terms of for little kids where I'd be dancing around in a costume. I'd love to do sitcom work, I did my own in Toronto for a year. Just continue on doing good work. It's important to be proud of what you say and we had a screening and I was very proud of it. People were coming over to me afterwards and were surprised that I didn't have an English accent, so that was good."
HSHost says "Congrats!"
Dan_K asks "What are the best and worst things about being famous?"
TaraCharendoff says "I don't deal with the extreme fame yet. It was strange at the screening cause we had to walk down the red carpet and all these people were screaming my name! After the film it was hard to move cause all these people wanted my autograph, they created a novel based on the film and the kids were asking for the autograph and Melissa is good with it and loves it and I've never seen her say no to anyone."
TaraCharendoff says "but, I have seen other celebrities people who are out to dinner and get annoyed, sometimes you just wanna be a real person. I'd say it's annoying if you're in the middle of a conversation and someone's pestering you or if they're rude and they don't ask if you mind them taking your picture, or if they're brash. If they're not nice about it."
HSHost says "Yeah, I think that's cool."
Joanee asks "Has a fan ever gone to extremes to meet you/ Or have you ever been stalked?"
TaraCharendoff says "I had some pretty crazy fan letters for a while from Mosquito Lake the sitcom I did in Canada and a few weird things for Batgirl. A lot of the mail gets screened and I've seen some of Melissa's that are strange and a lot comes from people in jail where their whole life is watching TV. But, for the most part, it's pretty positive and you never really know .. you just know what you love to do and hope people will watch what you love to do."
TaraCharendoff says "The screening was intimidating cause it's one thing to have a movie out but to be sitting in the theater with people . I was nervous. But, they all laughed and the response was wonderful. That happens in animation cause I was doing a series in Canada that never made it to air cause the parents thought it was gross. I played Patty Putty who could stretch her skin out. And, the animator said it was so much fun to animate my voice. At the wrap party they gave us a clip and when I said her lines they pulled my cheek out and tongue and it was great, so that stuff is rewarding too."
BaldheadedStepchild asks "What's the strangest thing that a fan has ever said to you?"
TaraCharendoff says "I'm in love with you, Batgirl. I'm like .. it's a cartoon! Please don't be in love with a drawing."
TaraCharendoff {action} laughs!"
HSHost {action} laughs!"
HSHost says "Strange, definitely."
BaldheadedStepchild asks "What's the most embarrassing thing that's ever happened to you on stage ?"
TaraCharendoff says "I was in The Music Man in Toronto at a theater and fell on my butt in front of everyone but I made it look like it was part of the dance. I think I pulled it off. People forget we're human and I know Neve would tape POF next to Married with Children and people would say Hey Bud and he'd be like, no. And, I did this series in Canada where they did fake court cases and I played a hooker who murdered her boyfriend and people came up to me and said, I saw what you did on TV you bitch how'd you get out of jail?"
TaraCharendoff {action} laughs!"
HSHost {action} laughs!"
BaldheadedStepchild asks "what have you done that people would be surprised to know you have done?"
TaraCharendoff says "Uh ... let's see .... They wanna know dirt, huh?"
TaraCharendoff {action} giggles"
TaraCharendoff says "I did something nice and wild and crazy. This will inspire all the kiddies out there. My mom and dad went to Florida and I got some friends over and stripped the floors and wallpaper and we retiled the floors and bought new kitchen furniture and redid the whole place so when they walked in they were like ah! They loved it. My family's the best .. my parents have helped me become what I am .. always supportive of my career which is so important."
TaraCharendoff says "They weren't show business people, I pushed them into letting me do it and they took me to auditions .. came to every performance if I was in a theater play, backed me, my dad had us memorizing Gilbert & Sullivan plays. I think kids that get piano or ballet lessons are good. You hear of cutbacks in the arts departments at school but I think those things are so important. To play piano and hear it make a beautiful sound .. so therapeutic."
Dan_K asks "are you single? What do you look for in a guy?"
TaraCharendoff says "Maybe."
TaraCharendoff {action} giggles"
HSHost {action} laughs!"
HSHost says "Does the guy know that?"
TaraCharendoff says "We just choose to say that. But, I think um ... its' important to have someone with a good sense of humor and who's attractive to you .. not the most attractive in the world. Someone who's very understanding .. I've got this crazy job and you have to have someone that's understanding and doesn't freak out when you have to kiss someone in a movie. I don't have a type, you have to be open to possibilities .. you never know who you'll fall in love with ."
guest1285 asks "What was the worst dating experience you ever had?"
TaraCharendoff says "I was a bit too trusting when I moved here and I went in someone's car that I was on a date with and they made themselves appear to be cool and I found myself to be frightened. You have to be smart and if you've got a bad instinct, trust it. I was lucky that nothing happened .. especially in LA where there are crazy people ... you have to be smart and listen to your brain."
HSHost says "Absolutely!"
SRT5 asks "what are your favorite shows on tv besides Sabrina of course"
TaraCharendoff says "I like to watch Jeopardy. Seinfeld. Um .... I kinda like South Park I hate to say."
HSHost says "That's okay. We all do, I think."
TaraCharendoff says "A talk show, I must admit ... now and then. If I'm in the mood to sit on my butt and watch TV. I like the news early in the morning ... know what's going on around ya."
SRT5 asks "what music do you listen to"
TaraCharendoff says "I listen to pretty much everything .. I like the classic rock from the 60's. I wouldn't say there's a genre of music that I don't like except for hard heavy metal .. drives me bonkers. Or very repetitive techno .. if it's too hard or repetitive it'll drive me mad. Not a huge fan of country, but I like a song here and there."
IAmALoveGod asks "Who is your favorite Author and what is your favorite book"
TaraCharendoff says "Oh boy ..."
TaraCharendoff {action} chuckles"
TaraCharendoff says "I have to say I have a strange fondness for "Like Water for Chocolate" with all the little recipes and such!"
TaraCharendoff {action} laughs!"
TaraCharendoff says "And, who's the author Vivian Tam who wrote the Joy Luck Club ? And, you know where you read something and you .. there's this book called the 100 secret senses by Amy Tan and I have these dreams of how this one character talks!"
TaraCharendoff {action} laughs!"
TaraCharendoff says "And, the classics like Lewis Carroll, ... eclectic .. not one favorite author."
Sid asks "DO you like scary movies?"
TaraCharendoff says "Sure."
Sid asks "What's your favorite scary movie?"
TaraCharendoff says "I'd have to say Scream. It was a great film.!"
HSHost says "It really was."
TaraCharendoff says "I thought it was well done and suspenseful .. and Silence of the Lambs is up there, too."
HSHost says "The scariest movie ever! Great acting."
Sid asks "What are you doing for Halloween?"
TaraCharendoff says "Anyone have a good party?"
TaraCharendoff {action} laughs!"
HSHost says "Any ideas of what you'll be?"
TaraCharendoff says "Haven't thought of it at all, been very busy with auditions and the Sabrina stuff ...."
HSHost says "You must spend a lot of time reading scripts."
TaraCharendoff says "Yeah."
Sid asks "What's the scariest thing that's ever happened to you"
TaraCharendoff says "Um ..."
TaraCharendoff {action} chuckles"
TaraCharendoff says "My sister's saying Israel. I went on a trip with 4,000 people from all over the world and you spend a week in Poland going to concentration camps and then you go to Israel for independence day. It was scary to see the crematoriums in the camps .. not to put everyone in a downer, but it was upsetting. And, a scary experience in Israel, food poisoning and I was alone, I fell back on my bed and felt I was dying and I was sad cause I wouldn't get to say goodby to my folks. But, someone came in the room and picked me up so I'd puke on the floor. My dad liked to play with the ouja board and that was always scary."
guest1278 asks "Did you enjoy your role on Extreme Ghostbusters?"
TaraCharendoff says "Absolutely! She was the coolest character, the only girl ghostbuster, I wish they'd pick that up. We had so much fun doing that show. The actors were great .... We'd tape sessions in the evening cause Alphonso and Jason were both on series. We were like a family and my character was this dark girl from NY who had a creepy side but intelligent. One of the title characters is a hero in a wheelchair and my character's a hero girl. It was a lot of fun, that was one of my far shows."
guest1290 asks "Is there any there any talk of a second season of Extreme Ghostbusters"
TaraCharendoff says "A lot of fans on the internet trying to get petitions to bring it back. It won an award for something with the handicapped. So, I don't know .. the problem was they were airing it at 8am and the target audience is in school by then. So ..."
guest1286 asks "DO you think it would be fun to do an Extreme Ghostbusters animated or live movie?"
TaraCharendoff says "Totally! It was kind of funny cause the first time I did the audition the original sketch looked exactly like me! spooky. The drawing changed a bit before it went to air. But, the original looks exactly like me, I have it."
guest1282 asks "If you could talk to one person in history who would it be?"
TaraCharendoff says "I hate to say the cliches like Einstein ... I'd talk to Albert. I'd love to know how his mind works. It intrigues me when people have different opinions on why we're here and what the world all means. I would have liked to talk to Judy Garland in her prime. The Wizard of Oz is my all time favorite movie. She was wonderful .. I'd like to talk to her about what it was like to be famous back then."
HSHost says "I know! Can you imagine!"
bobby_brady asks "If you were stranded on a desert Island what book, CD and video would you take and who would you want to be stranded with?"
TaraCharendoff says "Oh dear!"
TaraCharendoff {action} chuckles"
HSHost {action} laughs!"
TaraCharendoff says "A book of Rhymes by Shel Silverstein to keep me laughing. How 'bout CD ... CD um ... CD .... Some musical .. I listen to them all the time, I love Saigon, Les Miz, I'd take one of those. And, I'd have to take that fan of course ;)"
TaraCharendoff {action} chuckles"
TaraCharendoff says "I know this is sad cause no one has seen this movie, but I love it have seen it a hundred times .. but Defending Your Life ... I just saw it the other night. Maybe cause I hope it's something like that when you die."
guest1282 asks "If your life could be a movie, what would it be called?"
TaraCharendoff says "Uh ..."
TaraCharendoff {action} thinking about it"
TaraCharendoff says "Sheesh, that'd be interesting."
TaraCharendoff {action} sniffling from her cold ;)"
TaraCharendoff says "The crazy adventures of a cartoon girl and her (sniff) I don't know! A cartoon chick. How 'bout that?"
TaraCharendoff {action} laughs!"
Dan_K asks "where would you like to go that you haven't been yet?"
TaraCharendoff says "I'm dying to do all of Europe .. love to see Paris and Greece ..."
HSHost says "Definitely Greece!"
TaraCharendoff says "London, Australia. Going to places with such rich culture make you want to see everything."
HSHost says "It's so cool that you got to spend all that time in Italy. What would you like to be remembered for Tara?"
TaraCharendoff says "Career wise I haven't done it all yet, but I am proud of everything. Hopefully if I'm in a bigger position with greater roles, I want to be remembered as someone who always kept a level head and made people laugh."
HSHost says "You will! Sabrina Goes to Rome is on Sunday night at 8pm. Thanks Tara!"
TaraCharendoff says "Thank you! And, thanks everyone!"
HSHost says "And, thanks to all you viewers out there for chatting with us at REAL HOLLYWOOD.COM. Please join us tomorrow at 7:00 pm PST when our guest will be actor Jason George from the new film "Fallen." Good Night, everyone see you tomorrow!"
