| We did it! Nora and I finally met Rino Romano (Extreme Ghostbusters' Eduardo Rivera), during a Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles screening and panel discussion at the San Diego Comic-Con, on Sunday, July 23, 2000! Rino plays Lt. Johnny Rico on the CGI-animated series. On this page you will find a summary, videos, and vid caps from our "Encounter with Eduardo!" When we first got to the Roughnecks room, they were already running the projector (We were, of course, late ... Despite spending the night a mere 8.9 miles away). We did manage to see a few good clips, mostly some histerical RSTC "music videos" the animators had made. When the lights came up, I started to look around the room and didn't see Rino anywhere. Everyone on the panel had their name on a card in front of them, Audu Paden stood at the mic and moderated the panel, Fil Barlow (XGB & RSTC conceptual artist) and several other people from Roughnecks were on stage, but sitting behind the Rino Romano sign was someone else! After a few more minutes passed, I figured Rino was a no-show. All of a sudden, I felt a need to look at the door ... Right about that moment, the door opened ... And in walks Rino and a pretty blonde! Audu Paden eventually figured out a way to get Rino up to the stage area ... After someone asked if Rico and Dizzy -or- Gossard and Dizzy would become a couple (If the series were to continue) ... Audu said "I like Gossard. Gossard's a real man." Rino called out "I resent that!" finally revealing to the crowd that he was present. During his introduction, Extreme Ghostbusters was mentioned (I have to assume from the lack of response from the crowd that Nora and I were the only GB fans in da house!) and then Audu told us about RSTC final episodes (Which were never made, let alone aired!) For more info, check out www.roughneckchronicles.com later! After the Q&A session, we got to go up to meet the panel. I had been sitting next to Rino's girlfriend for the last several minutes of the session, so I kinda followed her over to him. He needed a pen to sign a poster for someone, so I just blurted out "You can borrow mine!" He smiled sweetly and accepted my offer ... When he was done, he asked if I wanted my poster signed, too. This is my favorite moment of the day: He knew who I was as soon as I said "Just make it out to Doreen ... " He turned his head and gave me the cutest, quizzical look, and then said "What's your last name?" What else could I do? I answered his question. "So, you're Doreen!" he replied. I was so nervous! I'm like "Have you really seen my site?" "Many times." "Cool, I'm so glad ..." Whatever else I said escapes me at the moment! (Note: Marla Charendoff told me before that Rino has visited The GBFF and The Roles of Rino Romano site, but nothing's better than hearing it firsthand!) We chatted a while, then I mentioned that I felt that if he were to utter even one word in Eduardo's voice, I would probably faint ... Rino kinda leaned toward me and in a quiet (It was a Roughnecks gathering, after all!), but most definitely Eduardo voice said "I'm a scientist, man!" I don't know how, since I am as timid as a newborn mouse, I then mustered up the courage to get a hug from him (Instead of shake his hand ... For the third time!) He was really, really nice, so was his lovely girlfriend, Kathryn Fiore. They seem like a very happy couple. Kathryn even took a photo of Rino, Nora and I ... Rino stood between us and put his arms around us and said "I've finally met Doreen." "I've finally met Rino!" I replied, like a goof! Kathryn said the pose looked cute ... We'll see ... I'll post the pic as soon as I get the roll of film developed! In the meantime, check out our Rino autographs (We each *had* to get our own ... Mine's a bit cooler and more personal than Nora's ... I think I will stipulate in my will that I be buried with it when I die) videoclips and vid caps! Anyway, Rino and Kathryn left the room with us and we chatted a while longer out in the hallway ... Rino said he'd sign anything we want (Nora forgot the pic, she had drawn especially for him to sign, in the car!) and that he'd e-mail me to keep in touch and to let us know where to send stuff we want signed. We started to feel like we were totally hogging him, so we finally let R & K chat with some other fans that had gathered and eventually go on their way to the Roughnecks luncheon. Nora and I had the greatest time ... But, we still wish all our fellow Eduardo fans & GBFF friends could have been there with us, too! I guess this sums up *most* of our experience at the con ... If I remember anything else, I'll update this page at a later date! Streaming RealVideo (RealPlayer Required): NOTE: We were in the back of the room ... The audio levels of the 2 Rino clips are a bit low. |
